The Latin American Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (LASBRA) held its V scientific meeting at the University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil) on 31st March -1st April, under the theme "The Neuroscience of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism". The program consisted of lectures in research methods and techniques employed for the study of alcohol use disorders - a section mainly aimed at young researchers - and dissemination of the recent studies on alcohol research conducted by researchers from Latin-America and Spain. The program also included interactive (i.e., posters) and oral presentations selected by an anonymous Scientific Committee, a meeting of students with the researchers, and the annual LASBRA Assembly.

There were over 100 attendees and several speakers, including Dr. Lutske Tampier (Chile), Dr. Consuelo Guerri (Spain), Dr. Yedy Israel (Chile), Dr. Rosana Camarini (Brazil), Dr. Ricardo Pautassi (Argentina), Dr. Elizabeth Teodorov (Brazil), Dr. Luis G. Aguayo (Chile), Dr. Carlos M.G. Aragón (Spain), Dr. Milagros Méndez (Mexico), Dr. Dartiu Xavier da Silveira (Brazil), Dr. Juan Carlos Molina (Argentina), Dr. Alexandre Medina (USA), Dr. Maria Lucia de Souza-Formigoni (Brazil) and Dr. Roseli Boerngen-Lacerda (Brazil).

The accepted abstracts were published on Argentinean Journal of Behavioral Sciences (AJBS) and are available at http://www.psyche.unc.edu.ar/racc/index.php/comportamiento/issue/view/15 The meeting was funded by FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo à  Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo), CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Ní­vel Superior) and IBRO (International Brain Research Organization).
