LASBRA (Latin American Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism) was founded in 1993 during a symposium supported by NIAAA and ISBRA, in Bethesda, MD, USA. From 1993 to 1998, LASBRA held four scientific meetings: Santiago, Chile (1994), Washington D.C., US (1996), Recife, Brazil (1997) and Cordoba, Argentina (1998). After a period of quietude, the fifth LASBRA was held in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2011, under the theme "The Neuroscience of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism".
The 1st Provisional Directorship was composed by: Dr. Maristela G. Monteiro (Brasil), Dr. Jorge Mardones (Chile), Dr Juan Carlos Molina (Argentina), Dr Raul Caetano (USA), Dr Gina Struffaldi Morato (Brasil), Dr Harold Kalant (Canada), Dr Gloriza Canino (Porto Rico) and Dr Elvia Velasquez de Pabon (Colombia). The 1st LASBRA meeting was held in Santiago, Chile in 1994, and it was organized by Prof. Dr. Jorge Mardones (Chile) and Dr. Maristela Monteiro (Brazil). The speakers of the symposium were Dr. John Crabbe (USA), Dr. Adron Harris (USA); Dr. Maristela Monteiro (Brazil); Dr. Juan Carlos Molina (Argentina); Dr. Lutske Tampier (Chile); Dr. Jorge Mardones (Chile). Dr. Miguel Belascuain (Argentina); Dr. Raul Pacurucu (Ecuador) and Dr. Alfredo Pemjean (Chile) participated in the workshop.
In 1996, the 2nd LASBRA meeting was organized as a satellite meeting of ISBRA (International Society for Biomedical Research Alcoholism) and at that time the Directorship had a provisional chair (Dr. Mariestela G. Monteiro from Brazil) and a provisional secretary/treasurer (Dr. Gina S. Morato from Brazil. Prof. Em. Jorge Mardones, Dr. Lutske Tampier, Dr. Juan Carlos Molina, Dr. Carlos Campillo, Dr. Elvira Velasquez de Pabon, Maritza Rubio Stipec and Raul Caetano were part of the provisional Board.
The 3rd LASBRA meeting took place in Recife, Brazil, in 1997, as a satellite meeting of ABEAD (Associação Brasileira de Estudos do Álcool e outras Drogas). Approximately 80 people attended this meeting, mainly from Latin America.
The 4th Meeting was organized by Dr. Juan Carlos Molina and Dr. Roberto Rovasio, in Cordoba, Argentina with other researchers from Argentina, Chile and Brazil, in 1998. In that meeting, it was decided that the 5th LASBRA meeting would take place in Uruguay, yet it was not possible to get all the conditions to achieve the aim.
In 2000, Dr. Edward Riley gave a conference: "The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain and behavior" during the "Congresso Brasileiro of FESBE" in Águas de Lindóia, SP, Brasil, under the auspice of LASBRA.
After a period of quiescence, LASBRA was re-launched during the 2008 RSA/ISBRA meeting in Washington, DC, USA by the Organizing Committee: Dr. Rosana Camarini (Brazil), Dr. Roseli Boergnen-Lacerda (Brazil), Dr. Maria Lucia Oliveira de Souza Formigoni (Brazil) Dr. Ricardo Pautassi (Argentina), Dr. Milagros Méndez (Mexico), Andrezza K. Kim (Brazil) and Susi E. Kawakami (Brazil). Dr. Roseli Boerngen-Lacerda and Dr Rosana Camarini from Brazil organized the symposium "Advances in Alcohol Research in Latin America". In this meeting, LASBRA was ratified by the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ISBRA).
During the 2009 RSA meeting at San Diego, Dr. Rosana Camarini from Brazil organized the symposium "Determinants of Ethanol Consumption: From Genetic to Environmental Influences". In this meeting Latin-American researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and United States elected an official LASBRA Board: President Dr. Rosana Camarini (Brazil), Vice-President: Dr. Ricardo Pautassi (Argentina), 1st Secretary Andrezza K. Kim (Brazil), 2nd Secretary Dr. Yedy Israel (Chile), 1st Treasurer Suzi E. Kawakami (Brasil) and 2nd Treasurer Dr. Luis G. Aguayo Hernández (Chile).
In 2010, at the ISBRA Meeting in Paris, France, three symposia were organized by LASBRA members: "Behavioral and neurochemical effects of alcohol on the developing brain" (Dr. Ricardo Pautassi from Argentina and Dr. Rosana Camarini from Brazil), "Ethanol sensitization: Thirty years of research into its mechanisms and contributions to alcohol use disorders" (Dr. Isabel Quadros from Brazil) and "Ethanol and acetaldehyde metabolism: Central and peripheral effects" (Dr. Yedy Israel from Chile and Dr. Etienne Quertemont from Belgium). In the same year, Dr. Rosana Camarini organized a symposium at the Federação de Sociedades de Biologia Experimental (FESBE) at Águas de Lindóia, Brazil, as part of LASBRA activities, under the theme "Drugs of abuse: ontogeny, molecular mechanisms and new targets for therapeutics". Dr. Luis Gerardo Aguayo Hernández delivered the keynote address.
In 2011, the 5th Congress of LASBRA was organized by Dr. Rosana Camarini (Brazil), Dr. Maria Lucia Oliveira de Souza Formigoni (Brazil), Dr. Roseli Boergnen-Lacerda (Brazil) and Dr. Ricardo Pautassi (Argentina). There were approximately 100 attendees and speakers from the representative countries of alcohol research in Latin-America, including Argentina (Drs. Juan Carlos Molina and Ricardo Pautassi); Brazil (Drs. Rosana Camarini; Maria Lucia de Souza-Formigoni; Roseli Boerngen-Lacerda and Dartiu Xavier da Silveira); Chile (Drs. Yedy Israel; Lutske Tampier and Luis G. Aguayo Hernández), Mexico (Dr. Milagros Méndez); and also from Spain (Drs. Consuelo Guerri and Carlos M.G. Aragón) and USA (Dr. Alexandre Medina).
